West End production 'Life of Pi' concludes successful China tour

After an extensive three-month tour spanning the country, the original West End production, Life of Pi, concluded its successful run in China with a final performance at the Xiqu Centre in Hong Kong's West Kowloon Cultural District on Sunday.
The tour encompassed 11 Chinese cities, including Foshan, Shenzhen, Beijing and Guangzhou, boasting numerous sold-out shows.
Based on Yann Martel's globally acclaimed novel, the play first graced the stage in London's West End in 2019, garnering five Olivier Awards and three Tony Awards. The show ingeniously utilizes giant puppets, dynamic stage machinery, and immersive projection technology to bring to life the survival narrative of Pi and a Bengal tiger at sea.
This year marked the highly anticipated debut of this acclaimed international production in China, finally introducing Chinese audiences to its captivating storytelling.
Throughout the tour, members of the production engaged with local Chinese audiences. For instance, during their visit to Chengdu, Sichuan province, the creative team attended performances by a local puppetry troupe. In Guangzhou, artists from China and the UK exchanged ideas on traditional Chinese puppetry and the evolution of contemporary puppetry in the West.
