New job standards to be outlined
By Cao Li (China Daily)

Shanghai: Standards for emerging vocations, many of which are growing mainly to cater to needs of the city's rising middle-class, are expected to be formulated soon to ensure consumers' interests and quality of service.

Some 60 kinds of new jobs will be given clear definitions this year. Eight have already been finished, said Zhang Yunying, an official from the Shanghai Labour and Social Security Bureau .

The standards define competences needed for the job practitioner as well as outlining the job itself, while aiming to foster more qualified employees in some specific high-demand or high-tech professions.

The standards are to be amended every three to five years in accordance with the development of the relevant industry.

"They will cover occupations already there and those newly emerging ones," said Zhang. "The occupations seem all to be in short supply, especially some new ones like baby tutors and pet nurses."

The baby tutor targets children under 3 years old who are usually taken care of by the mothers or nannies. And they are set to cover preschool education needs during this important period and give professional care to children as well, according to experts from the Shanghai Academy of Education and Science.

Statistics

Statistics gathered by the bureau show that 3.5 per cent of young mothers want to hire professional nannies for their babies and approximately 50 per cent of families who take care of babies by themselves need professional advice from certified specialists.
