American Gamez rockets 113 spots in world rankings

LONDON – American Robert Gamez vaulted 113 places to 148th in the world rankings after winning his first PGA Tour title in 15 years at the Texas Open in San Antonio.
The 37-year-old fired a closing six-under-par 64 in heat of 103 degrees Fahrenheit to complete a three-shot victory over compatriot Olin Browne at LaCantera Golf Club's Resort Course on Sunday.

Gamez, whose previous PGA Tour triumph came at the 1990 Nestle Invitational, set a tour record of 15 years six months between wins.

Browne, winner of the Deutsche Bank Championship two weeks ago, climbed 30 places to a career-high 81st in the rankings after carding a final-round 64.

World number one Tiger Woods, who played on the triumphant U.S. team in last week's Presidents Cup at Lake Manassas in Virginia, retained his grip at the top of the global pecking order.

Vijay Singh, a member of the losing Internationals side at Robert Trent Jones Golf Club, was an average of 5.26 ranking points behind in second place.

U.S. PGA champion Phil Mickelson and three-times major winner Ernie Els, out of action since July because of a knee injury, stayed third and fourth.

In the only changes to the world's top 10, American Kenny Perry and Argentina's Angel Cabrera traded places, Perry slipping to 11th and Cabrera climbing to 10th.

World ranking points are accumulated over a two-year period, with points awarded in the most recent 13-week spell doubled.

Each player is ranked according to his average points per tournament, points being weighted according to the status of the event and strength of the field.
