Handwoven cloth finds new life through innovation

Handwoven coarse cloth, often referred to as "history worn on the body", has a long and rich heritage. The traditional process of weaving this fabric involves 72 intricate steps. The Zanhuang Yuancun handwoven cloth technique, recognized as a provincial-level intangible cultural heritage in Hebei, represents the traditional spinning and weaving craft practiced in Zanhuang county.
Leveraging this heritage, the county has established five intangible cultural heritage workshops, providing employment opportunities for over 1,000 rural women near their homes.
As green, eco-friendly, and low-carbon lifestyles gain popularity, handwoven coarse cloth is increasingly favored for its natural, skin-friendly, breathable and sweat-absorbing qualities. Qiu Sha, the fourth generation inheritor of Yuancun handwoven cloth craftsmanship, shared the innovative journey of the craft with China Daily.
