AI-empowered schools gain pace

More than 50 universities in China have established artificial intelligence institutes.
Recently, several top-tier universities, including Tsinghua University, Peking University, Tianjin University and Fudan University, announced the launch of new "AI-empowered schools". These initiatives aim to integrate AI with traditional disciplines, cultivate professionals equipped with digital literacy and AI application skills, and address the evolving talent demands of the new era.
Here is a brief introduction of these AI schools.
1. Tianjin University — School of Synthetic Biology and Biomanufacturing (AI + Bioengineering)
Established on April 29, it is China's first synthetic biology school in a top university. It integrates multidisciplinary resources, employs AI to empower teaching and research, and aims to address global challenges in materials, energy and health. The school aims to proactively address the challenges of the biotechnology revolution and biomanufacturing industry transformation, serve major national strategies, and lead the cultivation of innovative talents in synthetic biology and biomanufacturing.
2. Tsinghua University — AI Agent Hospital (AI+ Healthcare)
Launched on April 26, Tsinghua AI Agent Hospital will initially pilot AI systems in departments like radiology and ophthalmology at affiliated hospitals. It seeks to build an "AI+ healthcare+ education+ research" ecosystem to expand access to affordable, high-quality medical services. The initiative emphasizes interdisciplinary collaboration and training AI-literate medical leaders.
3. Peking University — School of Artificial Intelligence for Science (AI + Science)
Founded on April 26 in Shenzhen, this school adopts an "AI+ Science" dual-mentorship model, blending AI with fundamental sciences. It focuses on cultivating interdisciplinary talents with global perspectives through a seamless "undergraduate-to-graduate" training framework. Research spans from foundational studies to industrial innovation, supported by a team of leading scientists and AI experts.
4. Huazhong University of Science and Technology — Design School (AI+ Design)
Unveiled on April 26, the school merges engineering with liberal arts to develop a design discipline aligned with AI-driven societal changes. It prioritizes AI creativity, digital media and smart industrial design, fostering an innovation system that integrates design, technology and industry.
5. Fudan University — College of Biomedical Engineering (AI + Biomedicine)
Announced on April 18, the school focuses on medical imaging AI, brain science and biosensors. It aims to train cross-disciplinary engineers capable of solving complex technical challenges, while advancing translational research for precision medicine and national health priorities. It is part of Fudan's broader initiative to establish six new engineering innovation schools.
